The March meeting was unique for DPC, as our membership was photographed one by one for the new DPC website! We also took the time to discuss portrait photography as an art form as we completed our membership surveys. Most members chose to go with a traditional portrait–there were hardly any crazy hats or wild shirts to be found!
Drew and Charley worked together to create the POTM presentation this month. In keeping with portrait-night, the featured artist was Richard Avedon, a noted fashion photographer as well as many other venues. Avedon did not follow the standard technique of taking fashion photographs. Instead, Avedon showed models full of emotion and more important, in action. The photographs Drew showed us in the background presentation were stunning, and showed how Avedon used portraiture to capture the inner personality and soul of his subjects.
In addition to his fashion work, Avedon was also famous for photographing patients of mental hospitals, leaders during the civil rights movement, protesters of the Vietnam War, and later, the fall of the Berlin Wall. During this period Avedon also created two famous sets of portraits of The Beatles and created several other classic works featuring rock stars. Each captured something unique about the individual that many other portraitures failed to discover. And that may be the very essence of successful portrait photography.
Lastly, don’t forget to log in to the Doylestown Photography Club forum and use your new username/password issued to you at the meeting to update your profile. While you are there, check the blogs and tour the site for interesting news such as the monthly photo tour. This time we’re going to a local Orchid nursery on March 14th.
Looking forward to April, the DPC has an exciting month coming up! Christopher John, our club “exhibitionist” arranged for a juried show where members have the chance to be selected to display their work at the Advanced Medical Solutions office in downtown Doylestown. Submissions are due by March 9th, and chosen club members will be notified of their admission to the exhibition via email by March 12th. (for more details scroll down)
Please note! OUR CLUB MEETING for April will take place on Thursday, April 1st at the Advanced Medical Solutions office at 54 East Oakland Avenue in Doylestown. This is a unique night at a wonderful location for our club, so please make note of the change. The meeting will revolve around discussion about exhibition of work, what sells, what doesn’t, how to submit work, and assist in the hanging of selected works for the opening on Friday. This will be an exciting opportunity to see club member’s work on display!
