The February Meeting of the DPC was another packed house! We started off the month with a very comprehensive look at Channels, Selections and Masking in Photoshop by Tim Ryan. We’re very pleased to report that Tim will be providing additional information on these topics in future Focus Ring Events. Thank you Tim!

David Stakun did another great job with our Photographer of the Month (POTM) presentation, this time on Galen Rowell. Rowell began taking pictures on excursions into the wild so he could share his experiences with others. He pioneered a new kind of photography in which he was not merely an observer, but considered himself a participant in the scenes that he photographed — he considered the landscape part of the adventure, and the adventure part of the landscape. Rowell won the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography in 1984. He had numerous photographic assignments for Life, National Geographic Magazine, Outdoor Photographer, and other publications. Thanks, David!

Next, the club was treated to some moody and fun images through this month’s challenge with the theme of “Winter.” Many thanks go to Barry Wehrung, who so competently puts our pictures to music every month. The challenge for March will be “Eyes and Faces.” This should allow for a lot of flexibility and diversity of images. Please send your images to Barry at bwwhdr@gmail.com by February 29th.

For the main event, DPC was pleased to welcome Salvatore Vasapolli as our guest speaker. Salvatore produces photographic still images for clients in many areas of photographic expertise; editorial assignments, commercial contracts and shooting stock imagery. He has 4 published photographic books one of which “Montana” with text written by Montana’s congressman, Pat Williams (Graphic Arts Center Publishing Company) has won both the 2004 SAPPI Gold Medal for top photographic book in North America and World International Awards. He is a 7 time ADDY awarded photographer. The images shown to DPC demonstrated his talent at creating high perspective, long-view images, as they have come to be known. Throughout the presentation, Salvatore offered excellent photographic advice for studying other mediums of art, changing perspectives with different gear and for seeking something unique in even well-known scenes. Many thanks to our special guest!

Henry reminded us about the Frame Factory Exhibition, Phillips’ Mill Photo Exhibition, The Churchville Photo Club contest and the Interclub competition (where DPC is the reigning champ), all coming up in the next 30 days or so. Please see Flickr for details! Don’t forget, club elections are coming up in June and many current positions are open to those members with an interest in keeping DPC such a great group! If you are interested in seeking a post, please see any of the DPC Steering Committee members. See you on March 5th!

January’s meeting had everyone seeing RED. The topic for the monthly challenge that is. Thank you again Barry for your entertaining selection of music to accompany the slide show.

February’s challenge theme: Winter. Our winter weather has been unpredictable to say the least, so let’s see what other ways you can capture “winter.” Please submit your images to Barry at bwwhdr@gmail.com

This month’s Focus Ring, presented by John Jacoberger, was on monitor calibration. The club has purchased Color Monki calibration software that it will allow members to use for free. For more on how this will work, watch for a Flickr post from John.

Dave Stakun promised a different realm of photography for future POTM presentations, but he felt he could not end the tribute to those photographers who explore the weird and unusual without including Diane Arbus. Diane Arbus became best known for her photographs of “deviant and marginal people.” Thank you, Dave! You were right. This topic would not have been complete without her.

Our feature presentation was An Image Three Ways (well, actually four). Henry graciously supplied one of his images for Steve Monastra, Chris John, and Sharon Mason-Parker to demonstrate that one image can be interpreted many different ways. Henry opened the demonstration with his vision for the finished photo. Steve showed what could be accomplished in Photoshop, Sharon shared with us what can be done using Nik plug-ins, and Chris John demonstrated the Topaz plug-in from his vast library of plug-ins. The final result, a beautiful image done 3, better make that 4 ways. Thank you all!

Barring any weather issues, we will be back on our regular meeting schedule for the February meeting; Monday, February 6th. The Focus Ring will be presented by Tim Ryan with an intro to Photoshop basics. It will start at 6:15pm. In addition to our monthly challenge and the POTM, we are pleased to have Salvator Vasapolli as our guest speaker.

Hope to see you next month,
