The DPC club has already survived the first snow of the season, right before our November meeting! Hope you all found the time to catch some early winter scenes. If you are interested in having some of your images grace the DPC website, please see Flickr for the discussion thread on how to send the images to Justin for posting.

The club has decided to change our December meeting to Friday, December 2nd. The event will be a combination of Holiday Party and Art Exhibit. The exhibit will be held at the Advanced Medical Solutions building at 54 East Oakland Avenue in Doylestown.

December 1st – hanging art from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Then on Dec 2nd (first Friday) there will be light snacks and adult beverages

HOLIDAY GATHERING/exhibition opening 6:00 – 9:00 pm, family/friends, and then 7:00 – 10:00 pm, open to the public

The art will hang for approximately 2 months

In November, Jim Bee presented a very useful discussion of Photography as a business. Tax rules, limited liability corporations, manufacturing exemptions, business guidelines and other important information was shared for our Focus Ring conversation. Thanks Jim, for a very effective and thought-provoking discussion!

David Stakun presented Elliott Erwitt for our Photographer of the Month. Erwitt began his career as both an advertising and documentary photographer and became known for his black and white candid shots of ironic and absurd situations within everyday settings. Funny, Bizarre, Ironic, Fine Art and Portraiture were all appropriate adjectives for this month’s POTM. Thanks again, David!

Next, Sharon Mason-Parker presented images from her recent trip to France to prompt a group discussion about travel photography. Topics included equipment selection, subject matter and post-processing options, and the group engaged in some good Q&A. Henry followed up with information about tripods, wide-angle lens tips and other helpful information. Thank you both!

There will be no challenge in December since we are going to the exhibit/holiday gathering, but in January, your assignment is “RED.” Please submit your images to Barry at bwwhdr@gmail.com by December 30th.

Thanks to everyone for a great meeting, and we look forward to seeing you at the Holiday Party on December 2nd! Stay tuned to our Flickr site for more information!

Happy Holidays everyone!

The Doylestown Photography Club is pleased to welcome John Barclay as our featured speaker during our November 4th meeting. The meeting will begin as usual at 7:00 p.m. and our speaker will commence at 7:45 p.m.

John is a PA-based freelance photographer who has a passion for leading workshops and tours throughout the country and around the world. John is a passionate photographer who has had his images used in books, on album covers and in a number of magazines. Most recently John was given the distinction of being one of 15 Excellence Award Winners in the 2009 Annual B&W Magazine Portfolio competition. www.barclayphoto.com http://blog.barclayphoto.com

John will be presenting to DPC his motivational photography presentation, Dream – Believe – Create. In John’s own words:

“Why Dream – Believe – Create? There was a time when I felt I could not create anything. My self-talk was, I am not a creative person, I’m not smart enough, I can’t do this. After seeing images projected at the first workshop I took, I dreamed of becoming a good photographer. Primarily with the help of well known accomplished photographers Tony Sweet, Nancy Rotenberg and later Dan Sniffin, I was able to chip away at the negative self talk and believe that I could create worthwhile images. Thus Dream – Believe – Create has become the centerpiece of what I teach in my workshops. I believe that everyone has dreams and can achieve their dreams. I also believe that when you truly believe, you will be liberated to be able to create.

The process and journey required to create images feeds my soul and brings me great joy. My goal in this presentation is to inspire you to capture the essence of the subjects you are drawn to using the creative medium of photography. This might entail capturing a small intimate portion of a scene. It might involve more creative techniques such as multiple exposures the “slide sandwich” or camera movement for a more expressive interpretation. I will also touch on the digital darkroom including the popular HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology and how having a keen understanding of these can help you achieve your artistic vision. Numerous examples will be shown which include traditional nature scenes as well as more abstract and urban compositions. We will explore the beauty in both the grand scale as well as more intimate details. The ideas presented in this program have application to any genre of photography.

I believe like Ansel Adams, photographers bring to their images their own journeys, their sense of the world, their experiences and their passions. For me photography is simply another medium of artistic expression, visual poetry if you will.

My hope is that after spending a couple of hours together you will leave inspired to create images that rise above the ordinary!”

Entry Info:

Plan to bring a maximum of five framed and five matted images to the exhibit. We recommend the same images matted as framed to give the customer a choice. We are planning to have display walls to hang the exhibit. You may also bring ten cards for sale.

There is a $10 exhibit fee for any amount of work entered

Make a list of your items on a 3×5 index card. Put your name at the top along with your phone number in case there are questions about your work or availability in other sizes

For your inventory list, number them starting with framed, then matted, then cards. We need the numbers so we know the total items you have entered and to track inventory as it sells. This is the same process as the Doylestown Arts Festival

All framed images need a price label on the front with: Artist, Title and Price. You may also list the process used if you prefer

All matted images need a price label on the front or back with Artist, Title and Price

All cards must be in an acetate wrap with a price label on the back showing Artist, Title and Price

There will be a 6% sales tax added to each sale

20% of the profits go to the Kisses for Kyle organization

Profit checks will be given to DPC members at the next club meeting

Please let Sue Ann or Chris know if you have display walls or easels you can bring to use during this exhibit. The more walls we have, the more we can display. Also let us know if you have a card rack that can be used. Any questions email Sue Ann at sarainey@yahoo.com.

This should be a really great Holiday Exhibit, so start organizing your images and supplies now as it will be December in no time!

Sincerely, exhibitions co-chairs, Sue Ann Rainey & Chris John
